We've been in the studio recording some new tracks this week. We've recorded FOUR tracks with Frankmusik in two days - which was STRESSFUL and MANIC, but actually quite fun - mainly as we're So Damn Good. Look forward to hearing a new recording of Landmark/Landfill, the first recording of new live track Face On The Beast*, and two completely new songs - Cleaver Kids* and Mixtape Beats*.

MILAN Prada City Welcomes BAF

We went to Milan this weekend to play London Loves. Apparently, simply EVERYONE has played London Loves, and it was extra exciting as we were their first gig of the new season. We kicked off the weekend with cheap torygraphs and easyjet flights (we're not really 80 year old conservatives, but you got free water with the torygraph, and we have no morals)

The flight was quick. We knew we were almost there when we saw the mountains.

The best thing about the Linate was the crazy wide buses. We want one. Do you rekon you can get crazy wide tour buses? This time next year...

We got picked up and taken to soundcheck, and then to our hotel. Here is Tobias's hotel room.

We had a few hours to kill so we went for a wander, but then we bumped into the owner of the club, who took us for pre-drink drinks.

After that we went to the club where our wonderful hosts gave us more drinks. We drank an awful lot of drinks. Here are our wonderful hosts...

After all those drinks, Club Pastic's fantastically painted walls did not help our journey to the stage. We hope everyone watching was a drunk as we were. At one point I accidentally tripped over Tobias and pulled out all his effects. Oops.

The next afternoon we went wandering around the immediate area of Milan. We managed to fit in a bit of touristing, but we didn't have time to figure out where the centre was. We just wandered around our suburb and took some photos.

And then we went home. I think we were all a bit hungover.

We took the high road...

We went to Scotland at the weekend - och aye it was fun, pal. Yup. Here's our ship's log. First, we drove for ten hours using dubious directions from Ian's Dad that involved Carlisle [that's on the OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY from Edinburgh, doh]

Ten hours is a long time, so obviously we needed to stop many times for food and toilet breaks. Especially Mark. He's like a small child.

We got there really late, just before soundcheck for the first gig at Dogtooth. The people of Scotland were aware of our arrival and were very welcoming.

Of course, being Cornish, Tobias empathised with them and all was well. So well in fact that ALL the people of Scotland danced.

We played songs and Suzie G took some photos of us. The stage was low so we got to dance around in the crowd. We NEVER get to do that any more...

The Dogtooth girls played more tracks, everybody drank beer and danced, and I managed to take the only half decent photo of the night. Then some band played, but we'd never heard of them. They were RUBBISH

The next morning, we surprised our hosts by taking horrible photos of them on their laptops.

And then we went Touristing. Tobias is incredibly good at Touristing, and we always try and get a bit in when we go to new cities. He went to Edinburgh Castle.

and sampled the local culture

At which point, we all went to the pub for some Real Ale.

And then we played our second gig of the weekend, at Cabaret Voltaire. It wasn't as busy, but it was All Ages, and the people there were moving like Dance Bastards. It was great. But we don't have any photos of it, so here's us sitting in their REALLY NICE dressing room before the show.

One of the great things about All Ages nights is that they all end quite early, so we could all go out and drink afterwards. Tobias was so happy at this, his face melted. Mark and Ian watched in awe.

And then the next day we drove home for another ten hours. We took a tiny little road that took ages, but the screnery was well nice. It was raining though...

Ah, so Edinburgh was supersupersuper. The people were all lovely, and the dogtooth girls were AMAZING for putting us up BOTH NIGHTS. You should all go to Edinburgh.

i was bored bored BORED at work today and I started playing loads of flash games. There's this totally awkward geek boy with a nasal voice who's just started and he's well into them. He's so obvlivious he goes full circle and turns out he's actually pretty safe.

these are the two i got addicted to, mostly cos you kill loads of people and the programmers took lots of time over the gory death animation.

The Last Stand
It's a zombie survival game, a bit like Dawn of The Dead meets 28 Days Later and you have to hold out and shoot zombies. My advice is get all the weapons until you get the secret 'Barrett' sniper rifle which can take out three zombies in one shot.

Stag Knight II
You're Staggy the black knight and you have to kill boy scouts. They're armed with sticks, you've got a giant sword. It's so fucking stupid but it's in the spirit of Moonstone (see below), which is in turn in the spirit of this:

Throw bricks at celebrities

It's a rare gig promotion post. We're playing the Proud Galleries on sunday 19th! And it's for FREEEEEEEE!

How good is that? Anyway, we were due to play in the evening, before Johnny "I'm a bit of a wanker" Borrel, of experimental avant garde rock geniuses RAZORLIGHT. Look, look at how much of a tosser he is.

However, since Johnny "I look like a confused horse" Borrel's head is WAY TOO BIG to allow anyone else near his stage, we're playing OUTSIDE. In the RAIN. At 5pm. With a PA so competely useless you won't be able to hear Dan. Of course, we've borrowed every amp we could find to make it ten times louder than the Proud galleries actaully want, so HA!

Ok?

So, come to Proud Galleries at 5pm and watch us play with too many amps. And Look See Proof also. They're very good too.

And then we can all hang around till the evening and test theories by throwing bricks at Johnny "My pecs are impervious to bricks" Borrell.

"As the day progresses we shift from pokerfaces to utter mysteries. When Bolt Action Five come to entertain us a double take has to be made. Dan (vox) looks like a child with a bowl-cut and an oversized (borrowed) green jumper, while Tobias (guitar) looks like a new rave cave man – complemented by drainpipes and a headband to tame his messy, dirty-blonde hair.
Though petite, Dan busts out some phenomenal yelps while moon-walking his way around the stage. Blips and beats whiz around him and intertwine with erratic guitars and intense bass lines.
“We had some technical fuck ups and everyone [audience] was a bit ‘errr’ because they don’t know us,” Dan expresses. “We got here in a rush, so just jumped straight on stage. We didn’t even have time to line check.” We were too hooked on the danceable-ness to notice. Tree Friend Tree Foe was a whirlwind of high hats and dirty effects, with sexy, husky vocals. Meanwhile on the slower side of the BAF spectrum, Can The Freedom carried shrill vocals that rocked us gently on an ocean of genius."

Wow seriously fuckin cool! But I guess the daddy of video game music is Doom I & II. I drew loadsa inspiration writing songs for BAF from doom. Fuck! that reminds me ages ago I made a BAF first person game for the Pc. I didn't put it on the net or anything. The idea was that your walking around Shoreditch shooting indie kids with a bolt action rifle. The sound track was springheeled jack. This would have been much better if I turned the song into midi, totally doom like. The last boss was Mr Sizzle our drum machine that was stolen. Well if anyone wants to play the game I'll try and send it to them. If its possible...

Well anyway I hope people like the vid game music. Will probably update the blog a lot more regularly now.

1234 fuck no what's going on

We played the 1234 festival yesterday. The ACTUAL GIG was fucking great [if a bit short] - thanks to everyone who came - we couldn't look into the crowd without seeing people we knew, it was really nice...

The REST of the day was a bit shit, though. We got there two hours early to see other bands, but ended up arguing with security guards and trying to find the right way in instead. In the end we lugged all our kit from a nearby street, over a field, and up to the stage cos security wouldn't let us drive in. Thanks to Trash Fashion for the lifts...

THEN we rushed off to play the afterparty, but all the promoters got fucked and went AWOL. At half twelve [when we were meant to go on] there were still two bands left to play. And it SHUT at half one, so we DIDN'T PLAY! FUCK!

The Power Cosmic

The Power Cosmic is one guy. He's called Adam Harper and he sent my mate a copy of his E.P., which is free and really, really good. You can also download most of it off his myspace.

I hate using copious analagies, but his music IS like a casette of 70's library music; stock music for TV programs on a budget, usually composed by Eastern Europeans and/or French people. You'd find it in a box from the musty backrooms of the BBC, labeled 'This is the future' on a scrap of camera tape. It screams to be played alongside grainy documentary footage of conveyor belts in a new West German car plant, but simultaeously the garish black-on-yellow imagery on his site suits the music aptly.

Like Metronomy or About, he's making lo-fi electronic music with an ambiguous musical heritage. It's always so easy to compare this output to kraftwerk but there is clearly more than one band's influence at work here.

We played the Tin Pan Alley festival yesterday, and it was GRATE. thank to everyone who came and cheered and scremed at us. Including SEDA who was INCREDIBLY DRUNKEN and quite funny...

Also, thanks to everyone who came cos it was ALL AGES. I KNOW, we don't play enough All Ages shows, but we'll do more, I promise. We got two lined up already, see, including the 1234 Festival in Shoreditch Park on the fifth.

We got to meet John Kennedy and Dan Le Sac, two people who've helped us out LOADS, but whom we've never actually met. And then we all went to the afterparty at Metros [urgh] and got a bit drunken and were happily surprised to see that The Ghost Frequency were playing.

Tin Pan Alley

Ah Denmark Street. The mem'ries. It felt like a return to hallowed ground to play yesterday in that pissed up thoroughfare. It was, ahem, instrumental (get it? no? ah whatEVER) in the formation of BAF, since it was through an ad taped to the wall on that very street that I met Tobias and Mark, and three boys began playing guitar to drum machines, and the first mewling sounds of a newborn BAF were created.
Denmark street is also where we still buy all the stuff we lose on tour, and we've bought at least a couple of guitars and a few synths there. We used to rehearse on Denmark Place, and so it was a rushed and drunken honour to grace the stage at the Tin Pan Alley fest.

The rain stopped and the clouds (pretty much) parted as we came on, which was nice, as we looked out on to a couple of thousand mostly confused looking people, did a set by and large unhindered by technical shit-ups and finally met Dan Le Sac. I know, we're terrible, he remixed us ages ago and we've only just actually met him.

Thanks to all the people who came up to us, and the promoters for putting us on. Tobias was pissed off about having to miss Latitude but i think he was okay with it in the end. The girls from We Start Fires were cute.

Mark made an acute remark to the effect that this was probably the only day in our lives that we would be able to say the sentence: "let's go to the job centre to get some free booze"

Geek Corner 3 - 80s heaven

This is old Jen's replacement. It's an old DX21, the FIRST synth i ever bought. It was made in 1984, and it's like a little crappy version of the DX7, which was this classic 80s synth that everyone used.

The main reason we're gonna use it is that the case is made of steel, and could survive a nuclear war. So hopefully it'll be a bit more reliable than old JEN. Also, it's got that cool sound on it that Les Rhythmes Digitales use in "Jaques Your Body".

We went to Barcelone last week to play Razzmatazz, which is HUGE. Freeform Five were playing too and we played at 3am and I don't think we've ever been treated so well at a gig before. Everything was amazing. Look!

Here is Joseph, one of the hosts at Razzmatazz. He hung out with us all night and made sure we were having a good time, and had to stay sober all night, and considering the state of us that must have been quite agonising.

And here's us in our hotel. Dan and Tobias wanted to re-enact Sam Raimi's camera rush technique courtesy of a trolley.

And here's some sunshine, which, being English, we thought was a myth of yore that the elders would tell a dying man. But it exists in Barcelona.

And here are some Spanish people (sans moustaches). They were polite and did not vomit at any time.

And we saw Gaudi's Sagrada Familia (sic?) which someone clearly left in the sun too long. Fucking Spanish.

I think you'll agree that that's all quite AMAZING.

It is oft said that BAF are videogame luvvas, and while we don't want to be pigeonholed as some sort of videogame-inspired band... come on, we love games. Except for Ian who hates them. Or says he does.

And so, as video game expert in residence, I present VIDEOCRIMES; a history of great games that were CRIMINALLY (you get it?) overlooked by us, the stoopid public. Starting with:

Terra Nova - Strike Force Centauri (1996)

Weirdly, no-one's ever thought to make a game quite like this early tactical FPS. That is, until Farcry sequel Crysis comes out later this year. Set in, you know, space and stuff, and based on Robert Heinlein's quasi-neo fascist novel Starship Troopers, it features soldiers in souped up powersuits leaping and flying and shooting other people. Strategy, teamplay and the endlessly customisable combat suits (eg "do I equip frikkin' LASERS or NUKES?") added a new dimension to a previously simplistic, arcade-y genre. That's not dissing Doom, but all the Doom clones that came afterwards, yeah? alright safe.

I checked around a bit to see if you can still get this game. You basically can't. Unsurprising since it sold about 700 copies worldwide. Maybe someone will make a rom of it for a PC emulator.

A while back we got some stick from some guy from some 90s (DJ? Production? Porn?) group also called BAF Soundsystem, who were a bit upset we happened to use their name. Even their logo is similar, I mean, weird. But the heat's off us for now. Looks like they've realised no-one cares.

Red Wizard Needs Food Badly

I went to see the best band in the world last night. The DULOKS had a single release party at Metro and, despite it being METRO [could actually be the worst venue in London. Maybe excepting the Dublin Castle] and despite the audience having a mean age of 103, it was WELL GOOD.

Gig's seems a weird description, as i reckon they only really played music for maybe 10 of their 30 min set. The remaining 20 was taken up with Fawlty Towers impersonations and Mira being Official Dulok Comedienne. Hecklers were humiliated, ex-boyfriends embarrassed and men with beards collected.

Man, I wish WE could have pulled drunken people up onstage and humiliate them when they shouted "You're Shit". Thing is, being four skinny indie boys, pulling drunked men onstage for humiliation could be dangerous. Especially when you're playing a warehouse in Hackney.

Actually, nowadays there's usually barriers and big scary bouncers. Like that confused one who stood RIGHT NEXT TO ME for the whole of the Chalk gig. Man, that was weird.

Also, while we're on the subject of Bands I Love, my Das Wanderlust shirt arrived today. It's yellow.

New X Festival

We played the Rocklands Festival at about 4am on Saturday - on a stage, thankfully, as otherwise we would've been squashed to death like an 80s football match. Really. It was busy all day, as all the booking problems meant that they were only operating on about five venues, and when Man Like Me actually destroyed the Amersham Arms with Atomic Bombs and ninjitsu, all the people tried to squash in to the remining four venues.

Anyway, I hid in Goldsmiths Tevern with 586 and Trash Fashion [which wasn't nearly as packed] and then we came and played and then everyone came on stage and we broke the drum machine cable halfway through Tree Friend and it all stopped. Here is Steve 586 dancing on stage in his very nice stripey coat.

The Batteries In My Camera girls took these. I actually met their pony. Anyway, apparently it had been that busy since the start of the day. Nice to see that, even with all the problems they had, it still managed to be a stupidly busy Camden Crawl-esque weekend...

We finally recorded Can The Freedom Regulate The Volume? - a really old song which we only recently started actually playing live. Anyway, everyone loved it so we recorded it in ultra-high tech studio fashion on Ian's Laptop.

But it's ok, cos *Princess Sparkle* mastered it and cleaned it up, and if you've ever heard any of his remixes, you'll know that he makes things sound SHIT HOT. Ian's currently working on a space-age video///:)

Shit, we played All You Can Eat last night. It was WEIRD. There was paint involved. And make up. And, as Dan bulletined just after soundcheck, "Jesus, you should see the size of the rider. I am going to s/h/i/t/f/a/c/e myself. They should call it All You Can Drink. We got painted on quite a bit. Dan was wrapped in cling film and painted on. He looked like this

Ok, so apparently our blood rus in day-glo, but we're forgiving kinda people..

"Soon you will know the name. Because if London youngsters Bolt Action Five keep playing shows like this everyone will be talking about them. There’s nothing amazing about the set up- guitars, drums, bass and synths and four skinny guys in skinny jeans. But when the band click into the ‘go’ position everything changes. Yeah they make a racket like Hadouken or The Klaxons or any other band keeping the corpse of Test Icicles warm do but there are blast beats here and half-second thrash riffs and songs so catchy people are whistling them outside in Reading’s shitty rain and they don’t even know why. Blessed with a frontman who dances and prances about the place like some bastard clone of Noel Fielding, Bolt Action Five play songs that shoot from the stage like lazers. Even when the power cuts out. Bolt Action Five are the band booked for the house party in heaven. Bolt Action Five do electronic power-pop without a hint of insecurity or trend-hopping (their blood surely runs in day-glo) and they should be massive. Go, spread the word. And soon everyone will know their name."

yeah so LOTP (that's 'Lottop' to you) and our good selves are being bum buddies and doing big homo remixes of each other. i knocked one of 'space and the woods' out last week and put it here to hear, ear to ear and tobias and i met up today to arrange our proper remix. we might actually glue bits from 3 lotp tracks together and do a medley. meh. we'll update you when faley and sam etc. get their one of us done.

also, i know we've bulletined it before but really, do download the dan le sac remix on our page, we'll keep it up for as long as we can but NEW BAF tracks are on the way which are chomping at the bit to be put up. honestly, they're WILD ones these ones. ARRRRR!

how was everyone's weekend? i went to see good shoes, lotp and kissy at barfly, which was full of shambling ape-like folk, much akin to the dwellers of an HP Lovecraft story. jamie of klax-sons fame was looking strangely dressed down in, er, brown... Is it their new direction? who can say... NUE MAUVE! YEAH ROCK out.

SOOO much. Oh it was amazing. Sniffle. I must find one again but all the ones on ebay are well expensive! mine was only £20. it was stolen. bastards.

Also I really want us to play an all ages show. i am fucking SICK of playing to anyone older than 18, all of whom refuse to dance. Yes they can nod, stroke chins and enjoy the music all they want. but no hearty slap on the back or encouraging words beats jumping and dancing with a member of the audience. I'm fed up of being the only person in the room dancing. you DANCE to this music! It ain't fucking hard!

Please, I don't want us to have to be the Sunshine Underground. please, someone dance, do a jig, slap a thigh, ANYTHING before i actually flip out.

I had to sit through a whole song just now on this shit band's myspace. they have more friends than us and they're signed and everything and they SUCK! willies!

the song was like 5 minutes long and totally blew. i mean, you KNOW i'm not arrogant (yet) but we are way better than so much shit. It's a curve, but we're getting better. The honing is attained by time; our booking agent is weening us onto bigger shows. we're practicing more, writing more, Hell we're still suffering an identity crisis. what do you think of when you think of us? what's definitive BAF?

Reasons we're getting better:

We're doing a music video today for Spree. yesss. one of our first songs.

ian and I are taking singing lessons. no shitting.

we're learning how to handle big stages. i know that sounds strange, but it's weird being on a big stage, so far apart from each other. without a drummer it's pretty sparse too.

we're getting a drummer. i know this goes against what Tobias and I decided when we started. But some songs will sound better, and frankly if we want to appeal to a bigger audience we need a fucker hitting stuff behind us. hopefully said fucker will be a hot girl who can drive and also does blast beats. Here's hoping....
