Geek Corner 2 - Dead Synth!

OH NO. Our JEN has died. I've spent all week rehearsing with it, in preparation for our TRIUMPHAL RETURN on saturday, and then it started acting all funny and sometimes not making noises.

So i got my drill out and had a look

And now it doesn't work at all! Anyone know how to repair a 70s Italian monosynth?? ANYONE?

I think i'm going to have to use something else...

Merch!

Some guys in Cornwall, land of pixies and metal guitarists, made us THESE. Now you be the envy of all your friends with these luxury "What The Fuck Logo Is That On Your Shirt? Who? Who Are They?" tee shirts. At least, as soon as we get the paypal working you can be.

Eye Shield of Coventry

We played Coventry on sunday. Thanks to everyone who came, and also to Neat People and Darling Of The Splitscreen. Neat People has sausages. DOTSS has a fantastic DVD and are vehemently anti drummer. Yes. It was good.

Also, we got THIS. And actual BAF Eyeshield, like what they might have used in Knightmare. Tobias was most impressed. Thanks to Lauren for her shielding and singing...

We went walking around coventry. It has a giant and very scary cathedral, the annex of which looks like one of those evil rocket things from Command and Conquer.

And we got ONE MORE TEE SHIRT CONVERT. But my phone's shit in the dark - go on, look. It's IS THERE, I tell you

VIDEOCRIMES

It is oft said that BAF are videogame luvvas, and while we don't want to be pigeonholed as some sort of videogame-inspired band... come on, we love games. Except for Ian who hates them. Or says he does.

And so, as video game expert in residence, I present VIDEOCRIMES; a history of great games that were CRIMINALLY (you get it?) overlooked by us, the stoopid public. Starting with:

Terra Nova - Strike Force Centauri (1996)

Weirdly, no-one's ever thought to make a game quite like this early tactical FPS. That is, until Farcry sequel Crysis comes out later this year. Set in, you know, space and stuff, and based on Robert Heinlein's quasi-neo fascist novel Starship Troopers, it features soldiers in souped up powersuits leaping and flying and shooting other people. Strategy, teamplay and the endlessly customisable combat suits (eg "do I equip frikkin' LASERS or NUKES?") added a new dimension to a previously simplistic, arcade-y genre. That's not dissing Doom, but all the Doom clones that came afterwards, yeah? alright safe.

I checked around a bit to see if you can still get this game. You basically can't. Unsurprising since it sold about 700 copies worldwide. Maybe someone will make a rom of it for a PC emulator.

Today in History

On this day in 1962, teenager George Lucas survives a nearly fatal wreck after racing his car at top speed just two days before his high school graduation. An aspiring racecar driver before the accident, Lucas shifted his ambitions to filmmaking afterward.

So there you go boys and girls.

SALARY demo all done.///

NEW SONG NEW SONG NEW SONG NEW SONG NEW SONG NEW SONG

We recorded Salary. Actually, we recorded it a while ago but we needed to do the geetars again. But now it's all done. Tobias came over and recorded it on my shiny laptop the other day. I mean, we might change the words and the name and stuff, but...

Recommended Listening

We've been listening to loads of new stuff this month. Here's what made us dance like the bad cowboy henchman.

THE GHOST FREQUENCY

I was always disappointed that i couldn't download any of The Ghost Frequency's tracks. BUT LOOK! Now I can get four fucking awesome songs from their myspace. And it sounds like things are properly kicking off for them - they support Polysics next week at the Spitz. Listen to this, it's like Hot Hot Heat playing the bad guys in a cheap 80s horror flick...

THE MOTHS

The Moths are ickle at the mo but they got a nice review in NME for their triple A-side single and people on the internet are starting to spread the love for them. Definitely indie with electronics, their lyrics remind me of The Buzzcocks, and are the perfect solution to too much BAF in my ears. Which is way to often yo

WHY WHISKEY WHY

Right - next time we bump into Miss Nash, we're definitely recommending her these two. I meant to last time, I really did. This song is quite fantastic. It sounds like the evil twins from The Shining with a sad geetar. Poor evil twins. Ahhh...

BARRINGTONE

yes, we all knew it, Clor WERE too good to be true; but thankfully Barry Dobbin, the Lord of alternative pop crossover Geniusness has returned, and like Rory Attwell's Rat:Att:Agg, you can tell which bits of his previous band's sound he was responsible for, as the discordant guitar scales are in full force, alongside ample surrealism ('Salad of Dispair', anyone?) and savvy song structure. See him and point at the Macbeth on the 8th June and Durrr on 9th July.

Tobias Goes Mental///

Tobias came over yesterday to re-record some bits for Salary. Now, he's in the middle of moving house at the mo, and his Metal Guitar has been living at my house with all his other stuff. Upon laying his hands on it for the first time in WEEKS, he went a bit crazy. Look how absorbed he is.

I secretly recorded him being metal god. If anyone wants to steal this and use it in a track, feel free - he doesn't know it's here....
